Chief Petoskey is Looking for Some Company

News Flash! -- Downtown Management Board rejects Public Art Plan proposal. Details here.

The idea of a public art plan for Downtown Petoskey has been on the priority list of the Downtown Management Board for several years but no plan has yet been created. As big fans of Downtown Petoskey and Northern Michigan art, we think it is time to do something about it!

Downtown already has a few sculptures, like one of our favorites, Chief Petoskey, pictured here in winter garb. We have some murals painted on the back of a few buildings. For a short time, we even had a location for independent, creative graffiti art. But shouldn't we encourage more public art? We think so.

Artist Market part owner Marty Scott has written a proposal to organize artists and other interested folks to get the process started. The campaign launched recently as Marty presented his proposed work plan to the Downtown Management Board for review and comment. The DMB was interested but wants to think about the proposal and consider a few alternatives. The Board will consider the proposal further at its May meeting. If all goes well, we will have a community meeting, open to everyone who is interested, to explore the concept and find volunteers willing to join a work group to develop an art plan. Your participation is definitely needed. If you are interested in helping or finding out more, talk to Marty at the Artists Market (231) 487-0000 and plan to attend the Downtown Management Board meeting in May.

Smithsonian Magazine recently selected Petoskey as the #6 best small town in the US to visit, largely based on our galleries, arts and culture. What better way to harness and enjoy our artistic spirit and amazing amount of local talent than by creating a plan to place more public art in our Downtown.
