A native of Evansville, Indiana, Doug came to Petoskey, Michigan, in 1973 to establish the art department at North Central Michigan College. Over the following thirty years, Doug created a learning environment that e3ngaged students in the wonders of art -- as creators, observers and patrons. A portrait by Doug Melvin manages to capture the unique beauty of a specific moment in time -- the light in a child's eyes, a private joke shared by a couple, the strong bonds of a family, a woman's grace or a man's character. Off the beaten path, landscapes full of rich color and detail, there can be no question that the paintings of Doug Melvin are easy to recognize. His work is found in private collections, colleges and galleries, including the Northern Michigan Artists Market, bringing his vision of the beauty that surrounds us to collectors and art lovers around the world. Honored by the community as the recipient of the first annual eddi visual artist award from the Crooked Tree Arts Center, Doug continues to be a tireless advocate for the arts. The only demand I make of myself and other artists is that we attempt to meet our audience halfway. Beautiful colors and an interesting arrangement are good enough reasons for the existence of any painting. On the other hand, if an artist wishes to convey ideas or feelings in a work, I believe he or she must give the viewer some reason to care about them: the work must be interesting or beautiful or skillful enough to draw the viewer in and make him care about the message.-- Doug Melvin | ||||||||
