I have taught myself how to make unique birdhouses over the years. The first ones were horrid! But as I learned, they started to become better and better. At first, I gave them to family, friends and co-workers because I felt they were not good enough to sell .
Now I am quite proud of the birdhouses I create. I use only quality scrap lumber I find at construction sites. What is one man's junk is another man's treasure! I love knots in the wood and hope my customers do also, I try to have at least one quality knot in each birdhouse I make, even if it means wasting some lumber to get a good one right where I want it. Every house I create is different I am not a machine!
I have lived in Harbor Springs and Petoskey all my life. To everyone viewing my profile, I will leave you with my favorite wood joke -- A termite walks into a bar and asks, "Is the bartender here?"
Also, I care for my 91 year old father who has dementia. He helps me with all the sanding on my birdhouses and garden houses. It brings me much pleasure to be able to continue our father-son relationship! He spends all of his profit from selling our houses on candy, cookies and ice cream! He is 91. I will let him enjoy all of it that he wants.
If you would like a certain color or shape house, just let me or the Artists Market know. It can be easily done at no extra charge . I rarely use a measurement stick on my houses. I just cut and create! Out of the 200 + houses I have made, only five have gone to the fire pit!
