My art is strongly influenced by the folk painting of Northern Europe, particularly by Norwegian Rosemaling with its graceful scrolls, fine linework, and stylized florals. I also enjoy incorporating other Nordic motifs into my painting, such as little Swedish "Dala" horses, tiny, monochromatic landscapes, designs from folk costume, primitive scenes of 18th and 19th Century rural life, and scenes from folk and fairy tales. Some of my work is done on fine handcrafted wood from the workshops of the Vesterheim Norwegian Cultural Center in Decorah, Iowa. Notice that many of these objects are, in the tradition of much folk art, common household objects such as plates, bowls, spoons, and "tines" (pronounced tee-nas"), which are Scandinavian bentwood boxes with lids. I enjoy further embellishing these pieces with personalizations, or with quotes and proverbs. I am currently working on a set of Russian nesting dolls that depict scenes from the fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm.
