A BLEND OF ART FORMS . . . . . .
Photograpic Watercolors is the name given to my unique work. It begins with one of my original photographs, paintings or drawings that is brought into the computer and artistically reworked using various imaging and art programs to resemble a fine watercolor painting. Contrary to common belief, this is not an automated task performed by software. It is a carefully orchestrated and executed manual technique that has been created over several years of experimentation and development work. In addition to the time taken to find and photograph the subject, each piece takes many hours of work to create. Elements of several photographs may be combined to achieve my desired results and some pieces are further enhanced by hand with watercolor paints or other media. Each finished piece is unique and cannot be duplicated by applying the same technique to another picture.
EXPERIENCE . . . . . .
In the two decades prior to recent retirement, I owned and operated a photography and graphic design business in the northwest suburbs of Chicago. We did commercial photography, designed and created catalogs, brochures and media advertisements, prepared pre-press film, brokered printing and produced corporate videos. From the late 1980's all of our artwork was created via the computer. My photography, design, retouching, compositing, scanning, color correction and digital printing skills and tasks are the precursors to my current style of artwork.
EDUCATION . . . . . . . .
My higher education began in the field of architectural design but my passion for photography soon took over and my photographic experience goes back over forty years. It began with schooling from The School of Modern Photography in New York, The School of the Art Institute in Chicago, The Winona School of Professional Photography in Illinois and internships with several master photographers. Prior to starting Hoffman Productions and Hoffman Photographics, I owned and operated a studio, was a freelance photographer, worked for the Audio/Visual Communications Department of the Portland Cement Association and was Vice President of Advertising and Marketing for a scientific supply corporation. My work has been published both nationally and internationally.
